Dorje Shugden is a controversial Tibetan Buddhist protector deity, believed by some to be a wrathful spirit, and by others, to be an enlightened Buddha. This god is a violently strict sectarian divinity that enforces Geluk purity and hegemony, which is at odds with the 14th Dalai Lama’s global and ecumenical endeavors, which even led to murder. 

Christopher Bell, PhD, our speaker, is a Professor of religious studies at Stetson. He received his BA in creative writing and religions; MA in religious studies, FL State Univ; PhD Univ. of Virginia (Tibetan and Buddhist concentrations). A Fulbright scholar Chris taught at FL State, UofV; and Hong Kong University.
